Chelsea In £10m Race For Southampton Star~NEWSEXTRA

Chelsea will continue their squad rebuilding project by making a bid for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, according to reports. The Blues are first working on completing the formalities for Timo Werner's switch from RB Leipzig.

Frank Lampard's side are getting their transfer business done early this year and have already captured Ajax ace Hakim Ziyech.

Werner is set to follow the Dutchman to Stamford Bridge after this £53million release clause was triggered.

The Blues are keen to strengthen in several other position - including between the sticks.

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has had a turbulent couple of years since replacing Thibaut Courtois as the No 1.

His back-up Willy Caballero is also 38 years old so a fresh set of gloves is required.

Football Insider claim Chelsea want to sign Forster to challenge Kepa for the starting spot.

Southampton are expected to only demand around £10m as the coronavirus has heavily deflated player valuations.

The 32-year-old slipped down to third in the pecking order at St Mary's and was loaded out to Celtic for the season.

Neil Lennon's side are keen to make the move permanent but if Chelsea come knocking his head could be turned.

Chelsea boss Lampard has recently admitted he needs to bolster his ranks after coming through a two-window transfer ban.

The former midfielder opted against splashing the cash in January so he can complete the overhaul at the end of the season.

“I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need,” Lampard told the club’s website.

“We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

"So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, if we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.”
