Pensioners Show Fear Over Rising Coronavirus Cases~NEWSEXTRA

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has expressed fear over the safety of its members and the elderly amid the rising cases of coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

The union’s president, Elder Actor Zal, in a statement yesterday, said the fear was due to medical experts’ revelation that coronavirus is unfriendly with the aged.

Zal also restated the NUP earlier call that the federal government should include pensioners among beneficiaries of its stimulus package being distributed to cushion the effects of the lockdown.

He said the union had suspended all its activities to May 27, 2020.

“In line with the last press release from this office dated 24th march 2020 and the increasing numbers of coronavirus victims in our country, it became very necessary for safety measures to extend the shutdown of the unions activities for the next one month, especially as the medical experts has revealed that coronavirus is unfriendly with the aged people above 65yrs old,” Zal said.

He added the union’s activities would resume officially on Wednesday 27th of May 2020, when it expected the disease to have been contained to the bearest minimum and a vaccine for the virus found.

“However this decision is subject to further directive by the federal government/state government on the on going lockdown,” he added.

He also appealed to its members and the elderly people to obey all the directives of the government and strictly observe all safety measures.
